How To Help Yourself When Facing A DUI

Posted on: 26 March 2019

Having a DUI charge on your record can lead to a lot of trouble, from increased insurance rates to potentially missing out on jobs for which you apply. That's why it's wise to learn what DUI attorneys might say their clients should know beforehand.

Avoid Being in Your Car

First, note that this is not limited to "don't drive" -- it is a broad idea that includes getting into your vehicle at all if there's any question about whether you might still be intoxicated. The police have the right to question folks who are just sitting in their vehicles on suspicion of drunkenness, and they can use any relevant information they obtain in the process to justify administering a field sobriety test. Simply put, the best way to avoid this situation is to not get into your car at all.

Hydration Helps

When you are drinking beer or liquor, it's prudent to consume water or soft drinks along the way to keep your body hydrated. Alcohol encourages the body's temperature to go up, and it also causes sweating. Likewise, alcohol can dehydrate the human body. Water is your friend in these situations. Many of the sensations associated with a hangover are nothing but the symptoms of dehydration; by hydrating, you'll be doing yourself a favor regardless.

Don't Be Talkative

If you do get stopped by the police, play it close to the vest. Voluntary admissions of wrongdoing are difficult to reel back, and the easiest way to avoid them is to not be chatty with the police. Some folks get nervous, and that's understandable; however, you don't want to tell the cops your life story. Do your best to answer their questions directly and concisely without going into detail.

It's the officer's job to build a case. That begins with having reasonable suspicion, which they believe they have if they've already stopped you. That isn't enough, as they need to build toward probable cause. All the questions the police ask during a DUI stop are meant to build the case.

Avoid Confronting the Police

Regardless of how a stop goes, having it out with the cops along the side of the road isn't a good idea. Maybe the equipment is faulty, but you'll be better off being arrested and having to contact a DUI attorney services firm than you will be giving the police a chance to charge you with disorderly conduct.

My Real Life TV Drama

I used to think innocent people being accused of heinous crimes was something that only happened on TV until I found myself being arrested for a crime I didn't commit. This is when I realized that much of what I thought I knew about the criminal justice system was based on nothing more than inaccurate media portrayals. Thankfully, with the help of a criminal attorney, I was able to prove my innocence and reclaim my life. This experience left an impression that has changed my life forever, especially the way I see the criminal justice system. Since my arrest, I have made it my personal mission to not only learn more about the way this system works, but share with I learn with others. That is why I am starting this site to ensure everyone has a place to turn for the information they need on criminal law.
